Good News about Trends in Teaching Computer Science from Keith Quille

Mags and Jack interviewed Keith Quille during the “Ideas in Education” conference on the LIT-Thurles campus..

Keith Quille is a lecturer at IT Tallaght ( TU-D). He has been training teachers who are interested in teaching the new leaving cert computer science course. Keith told us how popular current computer science camps are with both students and teachers. He also gave us good news on the gender bias front in that the number of girls signing up for these camps is equal to or greater than boys.

Interview with Julian Wood

Amy and Jack interviewed Keynote Speaker Julian Wood from the UK at ICTEDU. He told us about himself and being the Deputy Head of two schools. He then went on to tell us why he decided to share his ideas about teaching through the means of his Twitter account.  Finally he shared why it’s so important to teach through technology at a young age to prepare them for future technologies.

Interview with John Heffernan

She discussed her roles as a Lecturer, Mentor and Organiser. Lastly she talked the Maker meet that was held last night and how it brought together people of all ages to learn together through technology.

Youth Media Team and the Green Screen Experience

There are many primary schools in Ireland with freshly installed green screens and several of them cite Cormac Cahill and the Maker Meet team at the annual ICT in Education Conference as inspiration for their successful use of green screens. During the 2019 “Ideas in Education” Conference, young Dylan uses a green screen when asking educators when they get their best ideas.

Sean spoke about how his role as both teacher and principal in a primary school and Deputy Director of the PDST has informed his practice. Interview with Richard Millwood

Amy and Denis interviewed Richard Millwood at the CESI confernce. Richard spoke about mental models and they can be used to solve problems and to predict the outcomes of solutions to those problems. He then shared his thoughts on the broader concept of computational thinking.

Interview with Conor, Thomas and Una from the JCT Coding in Action team

Jack and Cara interviewed Conor Power, Thomas Boyle and Una Fleming from the JCT Coding in Action team. Conor spoke about the National event which they held yesterday which was both a CPD day for Teachers involved in the first phase of the Short Course in Coding and also a celebration of the end of the the phase. Phase 2 is now open for applications and schools can apply. Conor and Thomas shared what their schools are doing from a coding perspective and Una spoke about how research from phase 1 will inform the CPD offerings for Phase 2.

Interview with John Heffernan

John shared the differences between classrooms here in Ireland and those in the United States. He spoke about the broad diversity to be found in schools in America and how that impacts that has in the classroom.

Mags Amond on Creativity and Collaborative Communities

In her keynote presentation Mags Amond spoke passionately  about “Creativity, Collaboration and Practice” which are the main themes of the conference.   She shared many examples of creativity as well as the importance of collaboration and why teachers need to think about their practice.  A central theme of the presentation was the idea of community and the people who support us and challenge us to reflect on our practice.  We touched on all of these topics in our interview with Mags.

Barbara Hegarty and the passion in coding

Mic test at CESICON 2019

Denis tests the ATR2100 USB mic.

Just before the keynote speech by Mags Amond, Denis and Jack did a mic test using a ATR2100-USB microphone connected via a USB A to USB C adapter into a Galaxy S8 using Spreaker Studio.

Bernie Goldbach tested the Beyerdynamic mic connected to the iPad Mini via an iRig Pre.
